Pearland Police Investigating Shadow Creek Ranch Burglaries

Pearland Police are investigating a recent rash of home burglaries in Shadow Creek Ranch. Officials report at least a dozen break-ins have been reported in the west Pearland subdivision during the month of January.

The home burglaries share a similar pattern in that each time burglars have entered the homes from the back of the house, either breaking out a back window or kicking in the back door, police say.

In one instance, a witness reported seeing three to four men jumping over a fence and getting into a older-model blue Chevy Impala. In another case, a witness saw a small or medium white pick-up truck with some sort of bed cover leaving the scene of a recent burglary.

Police officials are asking Shadow Creek Ranch residents to watch their neighborhood and report any suspicious activity.

“Be on alert if a stranger comes to your door and asks for someone who doesn’t live there,” Pearland Police Department spokesman Lt. Patrick Savage said when contacted by The Journal. “That’s extremely suspicious and we’re asking residents to go ahead and give us a call if that happens. That’s often how these individuals will check to see if someone is home before they try to break into a house.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Pearland Police Detective Tyson Harvey at 281-997-4178.

According to police officials, on Monday (Feb. 2) a Pearland Police patrol officer spotted a blue Chevrolet Malibu with black rims, which reportedly matched the description of suspect vehicle from earlier apartment burglaries in the parking lot of the apartments at 2526 Business Center Drive. During the investigation that followed, Pearland Police officers canvassed the area and discovered two recent apartment burglaries and a third burglary that had been attempted. In addition, police reported finding stolen property from one of those burglaries and others reported earlier in January in the suspect’s vehicle. A handgun was also located in the car.

Jones was arrested and taken to the Pearland Jail. He is currently being held at the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center with bonds totaling $405,000.

54e759c4c855a.imageThe Pearland Citizens Police Academy (CPA) started its 20th anniversary celebration by kicking off Class 40 on Feb. 5. The largest class to date, Class 40 will receive 14 weeks of instruction instead of the traditional 12.

“We wanted to do something special since this is our 40th class and 20th year,” said Community Services Officer Daniel Hamminga. “We have a new logo and a new class schedule.”

Texas Department of Public Safety and Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office representatives will speak during the extra two classes, widening the focus of community/law enforcement relationships to the county and state levels.

According to the Pearland Police Dept. website, “The original concept of the Citizens Police Academy (CPA) came from Great Britain, where the UK Constabulary designed a program to give citizens an overview of British law enforcement operations. Known as ‘police night school’ when it began in 1977, the program was an immediate success.

“The idea spread to the United States via the Orlando (Florida) Police Department soon thereafter. The CPA concept can now be found in large and small law enforcement agencies across the USA and Canada.

“The purpose of the program is to allow citizens to meet the men and women who serve them, to educate citizens in the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of law enforcement, and to provide Police Officers the opportunity to meet and hear from the citizens they serve.

“The first Citizens Police Academy in Pearland was started in the spring of 1995. There are now over 600 graduates of the Pearland CPA program.

“The CPA curriculum has become a major focus of job responsibility for the Crime Prevention Officer. The academy is held each spring and fall and stretches for twelve weeks of instruction in the various tasks associated with law enforcement.”

While Class 40 is well underway and full, Class 41 will begin on Aug. 6. For more information or to register for Class 41, visit PearlandPD.com.

The search for 15-year-old Emily Lindsey of Friendswood ended late Friday (March 13) after she was found safe roughly 160 miles away near Cameron. Around 2:30 a.m., police discovered Lindsey by the side of road with 23-year-old Nicholas Vega, who was found to be carrying a backpack filled with weapons including handcuffs and a loaded gun.

According police officials, Cameron Police Sgt. Stringer was on night patrol when he noticed a man standing in the darkness by a guard rail on the Big Elm Creek Bridge less than a mile north of Cameron. Sgt. Stringer stopped to check if the man needed any help. Vega was said to be wearing all black, his hands covered by black gloves. Stringer found a knife when he frisked Vega, who told the officer his car had broken down and he was walking to Waco, roughly 50 miles away.

Sgt. Stringer offered to help Vega get somewhere safe.

Vega said he was staying under the bridge and needed to get his things. He also mentioned he had a friend with him.

The friend turned out to 15-year-old Emily Lindsey who had been reported missing to the Pearland Police a day before when she didn’t come home from a private school in Pearland.

When asked if he had any weapons in his backpack, Vega admitted to having a 9mm pistol . Sgt. Stringer removed a loaded, 9mm handgun from the back pack and put the couple into the patrol car.

Lindsey initially gave the officer a false name. But, her identity was soon discovered. Police officials report a search of the back pack uncovered a stash of illegal weapons as well as handcuffs and chains.

Vega was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon. He is currently being held at the Milam County Jail. Lindsey’s parents were contacted. Once they arrived in Cameron, Lindsey was taken to the McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple for an evaluation.

Members of the Pearland Police Officer’s Association (PPOA) donated their time on Saturday (March 28) at Back to Basic Child Care to build a wheelchair ramp for a young man who was recently injured in a car accident.

Maxwell James broke his leg in several places and has had to use a wheelchair to get around while he rehabilitates. This has caused problems with his after school care because PISD busses have a tough time navigating the parking lot at Back to Basic, located at 7408 W. Broadway.

Through cooperation between Back to Basic, W. Pearland Tire and Auto and PISD, the ramp, which connects Back to Basic with the larger parking area at the auto shop, will allow Maxwell to easily get on and off the bus. The bus will be able to use W. Pearland Auto’s parking area to drive around the business, preventing the need to back up, which is not allowed under PISD rules for safety reasons.

Sharon Baker, the owner of Back to Basic and Mike Poulin, the Manager of W. Pearland Tire and Auto, joined the James family and the officers from the PPOA as Maxwell tried out the new ramp. He gave it “two thumbs up!”

The Pearland Police Officer’s Association is the union organization for Pearland’s law enforcement. The PPOA is a member of Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), which “protects the rights and interests of Texas law enforcement officers by providing the best legal assistance in the country, effective lobbying at state and local levels, affordable training and exemplary member support.”

The PPOA is a co-sponsor along with the Pearland Chamber of Commerce for the upcoming City Council Candidate Forum, which will be held on April 15 at 7 p.m. at Berry Miller Junior High School, located at 3301 Manvel Rd.

Three Pearland High School students and three Dawson High School students were arrested on drug-related charges as a result of an undercover investigation led by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Task Force Thursday (April 2).

Around 9 a.m., officers went to the schools and arrested six students. Three students were arrested at the Dawson High School campus. Three Pearland High School students were arrested; one was taken into custody at the PHS campus and two PHS students were arrested at PACE, an alternative high school campus.

The Pearland Police Department also assisted with the investigation.

“I think Pearland ISD and the Pearland Police Department should be commended for reaching out to the narcotics task force for help,” Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Chris Reioux said when contacted by The Journal. “The joint operation went well.”

When asked if drugs were a problem among Pearland high school students, Reioux said the problem was no worse than any other high school in the area.

“No school is immune from these types of issues,” Reioux said. “But, it does appear these types of investigations are making a difference at Pearland ISD.”

The investigation was launched last August by Pearland ISD officials who requested help from the narcotics task force. From August to March 2014, a Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department Deputy was enrolled as a student and placed into both high schools as an undercover officer, authorities report.

The under-cover operation led to the arrest of six high school students,. A total of ten charges were filed including deliver of marijuana, delivery of a controlled substance and delivery of a dangerous drug.

During the course of the investigation, investigators uncovered marijuana, cocaine, alprazolam and tramadol.

Four of the six students arrested are considered adults and two were under 17 years-old.
