556c6c2ce2343.imageA Houston teenager working as a cashier at Home Depot in east Pearland was arrested on felony theft charges after he allegedly undercharged or gave away merchandise with a fraudulent receipt, officials report.

The suspect, identified as Jorell Ethon Campos, 18, was working at the Home Depot located at 1514 Broadway St. when a loss prevention associate noticed some odd business associated with Campos’ sales. An internal investigation allegedly reveal that Campos sold several items of patio furniture to friends or family members, but the receipts showed the large-tickets items had been removed and not charged to the customers. One suspect received more than $1,400 in stolen merchandise and another received approximately $184 in alleged stolen goods. As a result of the investigation, two additional suspects were charged with misdemeanor theft charges.

Campos, as cashier and party to all of the offenses, was responsible for the total loss of $1584 in property.

Campos was taken to the Pearland Jail and later released on bond. A Brazoria County Grand Jury is expected to consider the charges in the coming weeks.

A Pasadena man was recently arrested on felony drug-related charges after police were called to investigate suspicious activity at an abandoned house in east Pearland.

According to Pearland Police records, an officer was dispatched to a house in the 3400 block of Trelawney to investigate reports of a suspicious vehicle parked near an unoccupied house around 10:30 p.m. Sunday (June 7).

When the officer arrived, he spotted a red Ford Ranger pickup backed into the driveway. The officer noted on his report that the house seemed to have been neglected for some time as trash was strewn about the property and the yard was covered in tall grass and weeds.

The officer reportedly heard voices from the rear of the house and discovered the back door had been damaged. Upon further investigation, the officer located a man and a woman inside the house.

Pasadena resident Robert Darrell Day, 53, was identified as the male suspect and the driver of the red pickup.

The police officer questioned the couple and Day reportedly agreed to allow the officer to search his truck. During the search, the officer allegedly discovered a small plastic bag and glass pipe located on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The bag reportedly contained a small amount of a white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine, which was seized as evidence.

Day was subsequently arrested on felony charges of drug possession. The vehicle was towed from the driveway and the woman was given courtesy transport to Houston, where she was released without charges.

Day was taken to the Brazoria County Jail where he is being held on a $20,000 bond. A grand jury is expected to review the case in the coming weeks.

Two Pearland High School students were recently arrested on car burglary charges.

The trouble started for the two teen suspects in the parking lot of an east Pearland apartment complex Sunday (June 14). According to police officials, officials were dispatched shortly after midnight to investigate reports of a possible car burglary at the Royal Oaks apartments located at 1302 Broadway after a caller reportedly spotted two male suspects breaking into her car.

Upon arrival, two suspects were located that matched the description given by the caller. One suspect was 17 years-old; the second was 18 years-old and both appeared to be intoxicated, officers said. The two teens claimed to be looking for the key to their vehicle.

The key was later found inside the victim’s car, officers reported.

During the course of the investigation, officers located a Pioneer brand radio faceplate concealed under a nearby apartment stairwell. The faceplate, which was allegedly stolen from the victim’s vehicle, was found to be wrapped in a paper registration for a Lexus belonging to one of the suspects.

Several other items of property were found hidden behind bushes and in the suspect’s Lexus that were believed to be stolen, but investigators weren’t able to locate the owners at the time of the report. Police records indicate the alleged stolen items included a smartphone, a watch, paperwork and some articles of clothing. The items were seized as evidence for further investigation.

In addition, officers reported finding a Lexus key on the front seat of the victim’s car that belonged to one of the suspects, officials said.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with burglary of a vehicle.

Fellowship Bible Church, located at 1720 Broadway, holds Vacation Bible School every summer. Kids learn about Jesus, sing, play and do special projects. This summer’s VBC project for upper elementary/middle school ages was to help with the “Survival Pak Project” for Pearland Police Department’s Crime Victims Unit.

The Project is the brainchild of Crime Victim Liaison Velma Guadiana. “Parents come to us or have to go to court or receive other services and a lot of times, the kiddo is sitting there with nothing to do,” said Guadiana. “The purpose of this project is to provide kids with backpacks full of age- and gender-appropriate things that will help keep them busy and provide some sense of normalcy while their parents receive services.”

Pastor Mike Waldrop is also a Chaplain for Pearland Police Dept. and, along with VBC teacher/coordinator Elizabeth Lawyer, came up with the idea to have the kids design t-shirts they could sell.

The blue shirts with black text are simple, but powerful. The front reads, “Ask me what my shirt did.” The back has an excerpt from Matthew 25:40, “…Helping the least of these…”

The shirts are for sale for $15 each, $5 of which goes toward purchasing supplies for the backpacks.

On Friday (June 19), the kids presented the full backpacks to representatives of the Pearland Police Dept. and loaded them into Officer Mike Pace’s Tahoe for transport to the Public Safety Building.

“The kids had the best time stuffing the backpacks,” said Lawyer. “They put blue or pink tags on them and indicated what ages each one was for by writing on a piece of duct tape stuck to each pack.”

Noah Lawyer takes a "selfie" with Officer Pace.

Noah Lawyer takes a “selfie” with Officer Pace.

The kids enjoyed having uniformed officers there, and one outgoing young man even asked for a “selfie,” for which Officer Pace gladly posed.

The Survival Pak Project is ongoing and donations of supplies, money and backpacks will be accepted at Fellowship Bible Church as well as at the Pearland Police Department.

“Ask for Jessica [Toth] or myself,” said Guadiana. “If we are not available, you can leave your donations at the Records window in the lobby.”

The t-shirts will also continue to be for sale at Fellowship Bible Church.

“The goal of the Victim Assistance Program is to assist victims of crime, protect and advocate the rights of victims, provide necessary information, and prevent further victimization. Crime victims who make a police report are subsequently contacted by phone, mail or in person. The liaisons inform victims about police procedures, community resources, and available programs that will assist victims during the aftermath of a crime. The liaisons are also on call to respond to after-hour emergencies, and to provide assistance.

“Oftentimes, crime victims want to know what will happen next, and the liaisons are available to answer those questions. Crime Victim liaisons provide case status updates, information about the criminal justice system, court and hospital accompaniment, and emergency transportation to women shelters.

“Depending on the type of crime that has occurred, victims can receive information on shelters, counseling services or referrals to support and social service agencies. The liaisons can also assist with information about parole notification and assist with a parole protest.

“The liaisons may also contacts crime victims to determine their eligibility for financial assistance when they have exhausted their own financial resources. The Crime Victims’ Compensation Fund – paid out of court costs generated by criminal convictions – provides for medical bills, counseling, lost wages, funeral expenses and other crime related expenses without any cost to taxpayers,” according to the website.

Houston woman pleads guilty in 2013 murder of Pearland man

5589676a3302d.imageA Houston woman was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with her part in the homicide of a 51-year-old Pearland man.

The murder dates back to Sept. 29, 2013 when Pearland Police officers were dispatched to a home in the 4800 block of Pinder after worried coworkers reported Juanario “John” Rosas, who worked as a nurse at MD Anderson Cancer Center, didn’t show up for work. Police arriving at the house discovered water pouring from under the garage door.

Officers obtained a search warrant after there was no answer at the door and eventually discovered Rosas’ burned and beaten body on the bed. There were also signs of a botched arson attempt, detectives reported at the time.

Using the victim’s cell phone records, within days detectives were able to track down two Houston suspects: 24 year-old Damien Lucas Salinas and his girlfriend and accomplice Courtney Grace King, 22.

Investigators questioned Salinas who confessed to beating the victim until he was unconscious and trying to burn down his house. Salinas tried unsuccessfully to start a fire several times before covering the victim’s body with lighter fluid and setting the bed on fire. Forensic records indicate although the victim was unconscious, the victim was still alive when Salinas set the fire that untilmately killed Rosas.

Detectives said the flames eventually reached the hot water heater in the attic and burned through the casing and pipes, releasing a flood of water which extinguished the flames, arson investigators said.

Court records show Salinas beat the victim until he was unconscious and later returned to the house later with King who assisted Salinas in an attempt to burn down the victim’s home to hide evidence of the murder.

Before leaving the home, Salinas and King reportedly stole a TV and other valuables along with the victim’s dog which they later released in a field. Salinas told detectives he had struck up an online relationship with the victim in the days prior to the murder.

On Monday (June 22), now 23-year-old King appeared before a Brazoria County Jury and entered a guilty plea to felony charges of arson and burglary of a habitation. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Last October, Salinas, now 25 years-old, plead guilty to felony charges of arson causing bodily injury or death and murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
